Welcome to Sweet Potato Pie, 101. Sweet potatoes and yams are two different plants so let’s not confuse the two. The yam comes from the Dioscorea family and the sweet potato comes from the morning glory family.

#sweet potato pie #pie

Sweet potato pie originated in the south by slaves who created this pie as a sweeter alternative to its sister pumpkin pie. This pie has been passed down from one generation to the next and even though you can find recipes in every southern kitchen, this pie is developed through taste. Yes, you may have the ingredients but you have to taste the filling and add additional ingredients until it’s just right. Here is my recipe and I can’t guarantee yours will be as scrumptious as mine because my taste buds cannot be duplicated :).  Just be assured that these basic ingredients will yield you a delicious pie. Sweet potato pie is all about creating your own signature pie, so taste and adjust until your guest can say “now that’s a REAL sweet potato pie.”  All southern cooks make sure they have a sweet potato pie on their Thanksgiving dessert table.

Enjoy,

MJ

Ingredients:

3 large sweet potatoes
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups butter
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 cup brown sugar
1cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1tsp. vanilla extract

Directions:

In a large pot, boil potatoes, skin on until tender. Drain and let cool for a few minutes. Peel potatoes being careful not to burn your fingers because the potatoes are still hot. Place peeled potatoes in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients. Beat with mixer until smooth and creamy. Remove strains of the potatoes from the beaters and discard. Pour into an unbaked pie shell and bake on 350 degrees for 45 minutes or middle is firm. Cool completely on wire rack.
