Good Monday Friends, I hope you had a lovely weekend. This was my weekend to rearrange things around the house, now that all the Christmas decorations are packed away. If your home is anything like mine, it feels kinda sad with all the festive cheer out of sight. I took this opportunity to organize a few closets and play musical chairs with my furnishings. I also created a new feature for the blog and I’m calling it “Proper Etiquette Pretty Please.”

I am so excited to share this new series with you. I have to admit, I do not hold a certificate from The Emily Post finishing school but I have a few tips up my sleeve along with a lot of research so we will be properly trained.
Let’s talk about setting a proper table. I have found three place settings which are considered to be proper standard for dining. Formal- with seafood, Formal- non seafood and Standard. Here are two of the three table settings.
Formal Non-Seafood

Standard

Tip– Make an okay sign with both hands(thumb and forefinger touching). Notice the left hand is the letter “b” for bread, so the bread plate goes to the left. The right hand is the letter “d” for drinks. Place the drinking glasses to the right.

Tip– Forks go on the left and knife and spoon on the right. The flatware is placed in order of the meal course. Soup or salad is first or second course. Therefore, small fork is placed on the left side of the dinner fork. Soup spoon is placed on the right side of the knife.

Tip– Always place the sharp edge of the knife facing the dinner plate.

Tip– Glasses are placed in this order: water goblet directly above the knife. Next is the red wine glass (which is wider), white wine glass then a champagne flute if champagne is being served.

Tip– Dessert flatware is place directly above the dinner plate, spoon first and facing left, the fork above, facing right.

Tip– Place the dinner napkin on the plate as oppose to placing it under the forks. This way your guest does not have to move the flatware to access the napkin.

Now you are ready to set a proper place setting for your next dinner party.
