Wow! I was so pleased with the rocking chair upholstery job I shared with you but I had no idea you would love it so much. Thank you! You have me wondering if I have a new career in my future. With so many thumbs ups, I’ve been walking around the house looking for my next chair makeover. I promised to share the throw pillow cover I made to go with the chair and it was so easy.

Let me confess, I’m not a seamstress! Better yet, my sewing skills end with a semester of high school Home Economics over 40 years ago. My sissy is the seamstress in the family and I can’t get her to sew squat for me! I knew I wanted a throw pillow in the same fabric as the chair so I purchased enough fabric and a pillow insert while I was at the fabric store.

I had no idea when I purchased this pillow how I was going to make a pillow cover but I figured with some fabric glue, I’d manage it somehow. Then I got the idea to sew the pillow cover by hand! What???? I know, but once I measured the amount of fabric I needed then cut the pattern, it all came to me; that right sides together rule and I was off to the races.
Supplies:
One pillow insert
Fabric to cover the pillow (ask the clerk at the fabric store)
Needle and thread
3 buttons
3-3″ ribbons or about that much
Iron on monograms ( Hobby Lobby)
Permanent marker ( optional)
Iron
Pins

Lay the pillow on the fabric, measure the amount you will need to cover the pillow, then cut the fabric. Lay the pillow on the cut fabric again and fold 1/3 of both ends of the fabric to the center to form an opening down the middle of the fabric. Overlap just enough to close the opening but allow for finished seams. This will be where you insert the pillow. Press the seams and stitch (I forgot to stitch)

Fold 1/3 of the fabric on each end. Press, fold again and press to hide frayed ends. With right sides together; Stitch the folded seams on both ends. Turn sewn seams inside and you now have the pillow cover.

Place the monograms in the center of the cover (I painted mine gold) and iron on.

Wrap one of the ribbons around the button and pull until the opening is over lapped. Sew the ribbon to the other side of the fabric. Repeat this step with the remaining buttons and ribbon. throw pillow monkey 5

Presto! You have a beautiful custom throw pillow. You can also use a sewing machine which would be easier but won’t have the bragging rights of a hand sewn pillow cover. Jus sayin!
